assi

There is no wonderfull screenshot available, since assi is more or less "internal".

First:

Assi is a code adaption of a java 6809 assembler called "asmj".
(sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/asmj/) developed by Bill Yakowenko.
The sources in the sourceforge zip, the svn version and the binaries are not complete nor compatible. I tried reaching out to the author, but have received no feedback yet. I fixed the part I am interested in - so that it works for me. The source is public domain.

The assembler syntax of the original asmj is still in working order! See the section in this documentation.

Regardless of that I made many changes to the assembler - pragmatic changes that do work, but didn't make the source more compatible. I have not even tried. From the original sources I pried out the 6809 part I needed and fed the rest to the wolves.

In general I tried adding compatibilty to the assembler from Frank A. Vorstenbosch, Kingswood Software, AS09 - since that was for a long time my assembler of choice and nearly all of my own programs I did for vectrex are AS09 written.

Here I will write down the changes I did to asmj.
(in no particular order)

• assi is not so sensitive about whitespaces as asmj. Whereever it finds some, it ignores them. The original asmj would throw errors if an expression or a list of binary data contained any spaces.

• added pseudo opcode "direct" for direct pages register recognition

• added "<" prefix for direct addressing

• added pseudo opcodes for data handling (db, dw, ds)

• added operator "lo" and "hi", to get the lower/higher part of a 16bit address

• added pseudo macro opcode "local" to predefine a local macro label

• macros can now have "named" parameters

• added a second "escape"-sequence for macro parameters (as09 uses \, asmj uses &)

• if assi knows about the DP register and an "extended" address comes along which fits -> it will use direct addressing (jsr/jmp are dangerous, I left them out!)

• assi accepts ";" as a comment char

• assi can do end of line comments

• assi accepts "_" as a first label character

• assi accepts ":" as a label "end marker"

• assi register names can be both, upper and lower case!

• "=" synonym for "equ"

• flag for automatic use long branches if short ones don't fit

• long range branches can't be out of range (was a bug in the original asmj)

• more freely use of "#" possible, is not syntax correct, but doesn't do any harm either

• BSS, DATA, CODE, STRUCT, ALIGN, PAGE, TITLE, LIST, NOLIST,as dummy opcodes (they do nothing yet - but do not give compiler errors either :-))

• OPT, NOOPT
  slight optimization (started)

  • lbra are converted to jmp (save one cylce), the instruction is one byte shorter, this byte is filled with a NOP (AS09 does the same, otherwise more passes are needed, since addresses and memory keeps changing)

  • lbsr are converted to jsr (see above)

  • jmp with jumps over a short range are converted to bra (see above)

  • other long branches are not converted to shortbranches, since the nop filler would waste the cycles - an information is given in output nonetheless

• short branches are converted to long branches if offset is to high (warning is given in output)

• still more compatability added

• lo was added befor, I forgot hi...

• assi saves "*.CNT" files (for dissi) after successfull assembly

• comments on macro lines are now associated with the "lines" created from the macro, not with the "address" where the macro was defined (in the source)

• bug from original fixed, a branch defined by offset, rather than by label was not handled correctly (e.g. BNE $6 would jump to address $6 rather than 6 bytes ahead)

• bug from original, CWAI was treated as an inherent instruction, although it expects an immediate parameter

• added pseudo opcode "bank x", so that assi can discern different main files, and give output to other programs in the building chain.

• TFR a, b now works too! (space is ignored)

• expressions > 65536 can be calculated (befor there was a limit to each value of 65536. This sounds ok, but if you want to calculate 1500000/25  > that gives garbage!

• if supports now "=", befor it only supported "=="

• corrected File seperator in assi, befor it was hardcoded "\", now "File.seperator"

• support for "SP" as stack register (befor only "S" was allowed)

• added "Krumlinde" (sources to Thrust) compatabilty, which means many small steps towards more AS09 compatabitly, like implementing:

  • struct

  • cmap

  • and many other small things

not compatible, not changed, and will not change:

• undefined labels in AS09 are initialized with 0, so you can check if a label is defined by
  if LABEL != 0
  

• asmj has a "proper" "ifdef" syntax, I like that better!

• actually - as an option that IS supported now

Differences to AS09

There are a few differences which I did not "correct", since it either was trivial or would have resulted in very huge changes to asmj internally. Following are the differences I am aware of:

• " * " the Symbol for HERE. In AS09 this symbol represents the begin of the current instruction. In asmj the " * " represents the address after the current instruction!
  that means a code like
        blo    *+4     in AS09 translates to $25 $02
  
  To achieve the same in assi:
        blo    *+2     in Assi translates to $25 $02

  1. can not be easily changed, since assi uses the "*" symbol for internal calculations quite regularily

  2. the usage of asmj (if you look at the resulting machine code) is more "real" )

• if
  asmj can as of yet not concatinate conditions with && or ||. Here you have to use more than one if to circumvent

• if - second...
  asmj has two sets of if's one for expressions, this is the "normal" if, and one set for string comparison ifeq.

• optmize
  optimization is not as "good" as AS09 (no optimize for long branches to short branches e.g.)
